Pilbrow Surveying Limited are pleased to announce that we have entered into an accord with Global Survey, a New Zealand leader in machine control and guidance. We are now their preferred service provider for the management and quality assurance of the data required by their machine control systems.
Machine Control and Guidance systems will improve the productivity and efficiency of all construction plants and worksites. At the same time as improving efficiency, Global Survey's Machine Control and Guidance systems will improve accuracy, resulting in improved results, happier clients and reduced overheads.
To achieve the maximum efficiencies and accuracies there are a number of important areas which need to be looked at.
Each site should have survey control surrounding the site to enable a local coordinate transformation to be carried out. This will ensure that the positions and levels used by the machine control system are correct.
Data provided by consultants is not always suitable to be directly input to the systems. If a 3D file is available such data has to be checked for errors. If not then a 3D model needs to be prepared. An ability to recognize when such data is incorrect , whether high and low points have been identified, or if there are areas where design is lacking is vital. Then those discrepancies must be corrected which requires engineering experience.
Sometimes a contractor will want to ignore parts of a design such as median or parking lot islands which could cause a machine to “jump” if left in the design model. The contractor will need to be consulted to see how they wish to work in such areas. The creation of the models requires specialized CAD software and knowledge.
An understanding of how to convert the 3D model to the appropriate file format for use on the machine control equipment is essential. It is also possible to bring in background linework and text to help operators understand what they are doing.
The systems are capable of supplying as built data of the surface being worked on. However this data needs suitable software and knowledge to be used to calculate volumes or prepare plans.
Kamil Puchalski is our machine control specialist. His knowledge of construction surveying procedures, engineering principles and experience with Global Survey’s machine control systems fit him out with all the necessary skills to ensure that you get the most from your machine control system.
